The regiment was formed in 1810.

It was deployed from the 5th and 8th regiments of the Dutch army.

In June 1812, only the elite companies of the first 3 battalions managed to receive the French uniform. The rest of the soldiers and officers of the 126th regiment wore their old white uniform with white buttons.
